At the age of 24, the international midfielder of Manchester City; Phil Foden, was named the best footballer of the year 2023-2024 by the Professional Footballers' Union of England. What better way for a professional footballer to be voted for by his colleagues. As it shows that indeed the year that ends, it was this top. And his contribution to the prevalence of the title and his team, important.
The youngster who comes from City's academies has been one of the pillars of Pep Guardiola's team in their quest to win the Premier League title for the 4th time in a row. An achievement that no other team on the Big Island had achieved until this year.
Foden has scored
19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances, providing a career-best eight assists. In total, the 24-year-old scored
27 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions, also helping City win both the
2023 UEFA Super Cup and the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup.
Alongside the goals and inspired creativity in attack, Foden once again showed his tactical versatility, operating in a number of different positions for City, where he again showed his quality either by deploying out wide or in a more creative central position.
Foden's new accolade followed his being voted Premier League Footballer of the Year by Sports Journalists. In other words, the people who deal exclusively with the Premier League and the popular sport in general.
In further recognition of his influence, Foden was also voted into the PFA Team of the Year, alongside fellow City players Kyle Walker, Rodrigo and Erling Haaland.
Meanwhile, Manchester City's Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw was named the Women's Player of the Year respectively for last season at the English Professional Footballers' Association awards tonight.
Jamaican forward Shaw was top scorer in the Women's Super League with 21 goals as City lost the title on goal difference to Chelsea.
Meanwhile Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer was named Young Player of the Year, while Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton dominated the women's field (on loan at Tottenham).
Palmer was second only to City's Erling Haaland in the Premier League goalscoring charts with 22 goals and also scored more goals than any other Chelsea player – 11.
West Ham's new signing Crisencio Somerville has been voted the Championship's top footballer of the year. Somerville has had a stunning season in a Leeds shirt, scoring 21 in all competitions as the Yorkshire club missed out on promotion to the Premier League with defeat in last season's play-off final.
Alfie May, now with Birmingham, was voted League One Player of the Year after scoring 23 goals for Charlton last season.
