Hansi Flick's comeback at FC Bayern is apparently getting closer. Record national player Lothar Matthäus is also calling for a return campaign.
"He knows the club and has worked successfully there. He has many officials on his side. I am convinced that he would like to involve the campus because he also likes to develop young players," said Matthäus.
Flick initially moved to FC Bayern in the summer of 2019 as Niko Kovac's assistant. Four months later, the 59-year-old took over as head coach and promptly led the club to a treble win. But in 2021 they parted ways again.
“Of course there was a problem with Hasan Salihamidzic back then,” said Matthäus, recalling the differences between Flick and FC Bayern’s former sports director. "They decided against Hansi and in favor of Hasan. From then on, FC Bayern actually went downhill a bit, especially when it came to the coaching position," he analyzed.
"No coach stayed there longer. Even Hansi Flick wasn't there as long as he would have liked. This conflict with Hasan Salihamidzic was crucial - we didn't get along," Matthäus looked back.
"As I said, I think FC Bayern made the wrong decision by separating from Hansi Flick. I think if Hansi Flick had stayed at Bayern Munich longer, there would have been fewer negative headlines in recent years"
Flick's successor Julian Nagelsmann was released from FC Bayern after less than two full seasons. In addition, the German record champions and Thomas Tuchel will part ways again in the summer.
Matthäus described the collaboration as a "misunderstanding" "because we didn't clearly discuss what we wanted from the start. Then, of course, the decision-makers for Tuchel [Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic, editor's note] were short After that, they were put on leave or laid off. From that point of view, it just didn't work."
Tuchel "perhaps asked too much, which is why Uli Hoeneß said two weeks ago that he didn't want to develop young players because he actually always wanted ready-made players. Although FC Bayern already has players on campus who are definitely somewhere have what it takes to succeed Thomas Müller, Philipp Lahm or Bastian Schweinsteiger," said Matthäus.
