Spanish-Argentine Alejandro Garnacho scored his first goal for Manchester United against Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League at the age of 18, after an assist from his idol Cristiano Ronaldo. After the match, which ended in a 0-1 win for the English thanks to his goal, Bruno Fernandes spoke to the media in the mixed zone to congratulate his team-mate and make it clear that this goal is the result of his hard work and effort.
"He was good, but he knows we expected a lot from him. He is still very young. He is doing very well. At the beginning of the season, he was not at his best. During the tour, he didn't have the best attitude he should have had and that's why he hasn't had chances so far," said Bruno Fernandes.
He added:
"Garnacho now has opportunities because he is training better, he has a better attitude and he has earned them. He didn't get opportunities before because he wasn't good enough in training and he wasn't good enough mentally. He's changed that and, because of that, he's got them now. Everyone is very happy for him and pleased with his goal".
Meanwhile Alejandro Garnazzo meets all the criteria to be given this designation, as at the age of 18 he has already managed to write his name in the Golden Book of one of the most historic clubs on the planet.
With the goal he scored against Sociedad on November 3, 2022, he became Manchester United's youngest foreign (non-English) scorer in a European match, surpassing - considered by many to be the greatest - Red Devils legend George Best.
The Northern Irishman was 18 years and 158 days old when he scored his first European goal in October 1964 against Djurgarden in the Exhibition Cup, the precursor to the UEFA Europa League. In the context of this event, the Argentinian who is 18 years and 125 days old, as he was born on July 1, 2004, scored.
As for United's youngest goalscorer in all competitions, that's Norman Whiteside who scored a week after his 17th birthday in a 2-0 win over Stoke on 15 May 1982. Incidentally Whiteside became the youngest a few weeks later top scorer in World Cup history in Northern Ireland's match against Yugoslavia.
