The Real Madrid`s President, defended the idea of a "European Super League" at the General Assembly of his club

Florentino Pérez, President of Real Madrid

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez again defended the idea of a European Super League at the General Assembly on Saturday (20/11), saying it was the only way to impose tighter financial controls on teams, as his model Financial Fair Play (FFP) of UEFA, favors clubs supported by sovereign states.

Twelve major European clubs tried to form a league in April, but the plan collapsed within days of the departure (not to be noted in writing) of the six English clubs involved, to be followed by Atletico Madrid, Milan and Inter. Only Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus continue to support the project.

"It is a project that will finally implement strict financial controls that will be observed and will prevent the growing proliferation of unacceptable situations in which clubs receive indiscriminate financial support from states or other sources," Perez told the Real Madrid General Assembly.

"This practice, which is not appropriate in the European Union, distorts competition and leads football to economic disaster," he added, referring to the current funding rules.

He also said that UEFA President Alexander Ceferin had given false information to the fans in order to discredit the creation of the European Super League.

"The clubs were threatened with sanctions inappropriate for the rule of law and the presidents of the clubs were insulted. "How is it possible for the president of UEFA to publicly insult the president of Juventus, one of the oldest and most well-known teams, with words that I cannot say here?"  wondered Pérez.

"The pressure and threats exerted by UEFA have reached such an extreme that nine of the 12 clubs had to publicly announce their intention to withdraw from the project, regardless of the commitments they had signed and which could not be legally violated" , he said.

UEFA launched an investigation into the plan for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus, but suspended the process in June after the clubs' European Super League Company SL secured a court ruling in Madrid against the investigation.

Now, of course, we must not forget that the issue in question has reached the Supreme European Court in Luxembourg, where the case will be tried by the great Greek judge, Athanasios Rantos.
