The president and owner of Olympiacos, Nottingham Forest and Rio Ave; Evangelos Marinakis confirmed, in an interview with Sky Sports, that he is negotiating the intention to purchase the Brazilian club Vasco da Gama. A news that has already become the first topic in the Brazilian media and in the widely read “O’ Globo”, which has already revealed that Mr. Marinakis has ongoing negotiations with the team.
Mr. Marinakis, in the interview, talks about his ambitions to expand his football portfolio by acquiring a major club in Brazil.
Recently, Vasco da Gama president, Pedrinho , was asked about the Greek’s interest and preferred to remain cautious. He said he had signed confidentiality agreements with interested parties, whose names are confidential.
“There are some investors and I have to be careful when I talk, because people think these are advanced negotiations. There are some things that have been signed at the beginning of the conversation, which I wouldn’t even call a negotiation. Through this confidentiality agreement, I can’t say who the investors are,”
said Pedrinho.
“The 57-year-old businessman started his professional career in the shipping industry. His family owns the Capital Maritime Group, which has assets worth 22 billion dollars”, notes, among other things, “O’Globo” in the presentation of Vangelis Marinakis and reports on his path:
“The first step in football was the purchase of Olympiacos in 2010. Since he assumed financial control, the club has won the national championship 7 consecutive seasons, in addition to lifting the Cup four times. At the same time, in May 2024, he saw his team Olympiacos conquer its first European trophy, the Conference league”
After his first adventure in the world of football, mr. Marinakis became a majority partner of Nottingham Forest in May 2017. The team returned to the Premier League in 2022, after 23 seasons outside the elite of English football. The latest move was the purchase of Portuguese side Rio Ave last year. Recently, he chose to hire Brazilian Edu Gaspar, former sporting director at Arsenal, to expand the football operations.
The fact is that Mr. Marinakis has very high plans for Olympiacos and after winning the third European trophy, he has now started to look at the second tier, the UEFA Europa League, where his team is doing very well…
