Gianluigi Donnarumma began his career at Milan in 2015. He was then the second youngest goalkeeper to make his Serie A debut, at the age of 16 years and 242 days.
He quickly earned the starting jersey and quickly became a household name. He was one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the world. He also broke the record for the youngest player to appear for an Italian under-21 international, at the age of 17 years and 28 days in March 2016. Six months later, he made his international debut for the Italian national team, becoming the youngest goalkeeper for the Italian national team, at the age of 17 years and 189 days.
His career had therefore taken an upward trajectory and in July 2021 Paris Saint-Germain paid the sum of 60 million euros and acquired him. His reputation dominated Europe and there were not a few who considered him to be the successor to Gigi Buffon.
Paris' goal was of course to help him, along with other superstars Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe, conquer the top of Europe, winning the UEFA Champions League. However, this plan failed. The French team has not achieved anything except in domestic competitions and one by one the great aces (Messi, Neymar, Ramos, Mbappe) and several others have left. And now it seems that Donnarumma's time has come.
The Italian international goalkeeper has lost his place under the Paris Saint-Germain goalposts, and Donnarumma has complained to his Spanish coach, Luis Enrique, about his preference for Matvey Safonov. In fact, Donnarumma has asked his agent to negotiate with the Paris management for his transfer, with Italy as his priority and England as his second choice! It is said that Bayern Munich (Neuer is 37 years old) and Manchester City have already shown interest in his (possible) acquisition.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper does not like to sit on the bench and this development has bothered him to a great extent, as his contract expires in 2026.
This condition, combined with the team's mediocre performance this year, especially in Europe, has made Donnarumma think deeply.
It remains to be seen whether he will ultimately decide to rebrand with the jersey of another team, because the title "new Buffon" no longer sounds the same...
