Alejandro Grimaldo has been a star performer on their way to a maiden Bundesliga title and has been nominated for the award for the best footballer of the season in Germany.
With the impressive number of 9 goals and 9 assists from the position of left back-half since Xabi Alonso uses him there, as a playmaker, the Spanish footballer is the most "value for... no money" transfer of the season. Because he left Benfica after seven years and joined the group of "aspirins" as a free agent.
Grimaldo spoke on a webcast about Bayer Leverkusen's unbeaten run towards the German title.
"I came to Leverkusen to win titles and I realized in the pre-season that the team was a lot better than I thought. That's when I thought we're going to make people talk about us!” said the 28-year-old, who won't be crowned champion by a miracle.
Bayer Leverkusen signed the now 28-year-old to cover both the left side of the defense and midfield in the summer of 2023, and since then his career has been soaring.
Nine years at Benfica was a long time. He could have left earlier for a better and more competitive league. For a team aiming for distinction in the UEFA Champions League. Who would leave an ideal environment, a "family" that respects and values him? The fullness of time brought the completion of the contract and the now mature Alejandro went free. Benfica "launched" him, they didn't claim a single euro for his transfer, because they took what they could from him on the field.
Grimaldo recently signed until 2027, while now his aim is to be present in the final phase of the 17th European Championship this summer in Germany.
Grimaldo started his career in the academies of Valencia, then went to those of FC Barcelona and from there in the summer of 2016 he moved to Benfica where he has been playing for the last seven years….
Grimaldo, chose the organization of the Bundesliga and the confidence of Xabi Alonso. Under the umbrella of his countryman, he could quickly adapt and adopt the German philosophy. For his part, of course, the former captain of Real Madrid knew the skills of the footballer and how he would make use of him. The aggressive tactics were perfectly suited, he was satisfied with his figures.
