In May 2017, when Greek shipowner
Vangelis Marinakis acquired its majority stake,
Nottingham Forest
was competing in the Championship. It was trying in vain to win its promotion to the top division. It succeeded in 2022 when it secured its promotion through the play-off process. Initially, it struggled in the
Premier League, where on its return after 23 years it almost escaped with a score of ... five. The following season it performed better and this year it is making a big splash. With Portuguese coach
Nuno Espirito Santo (he took Simon Cooper's place on 23/12/2023) Nottingham is achieving incredible things. After their last away win over Everton, they reached 5 consecutive victories. With goals from
Chris Wood and Gibbs White, they "cleansed" Everton at "Goodison Park" (0-2) for the 19th matchday of the
Premier League and reached their
11th total victories in this year's championship.
All "enemies and friends" recognize that this year's Nottingham is making a very impressive progress, as it is in 2nd place and sees... an exit to the next UEFA Champions League.
Nuno's team, before the big double on Merseyside against Everton, had defeated Tottenham 1-0 at the "City Ground", as well as Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford, Aston Villa at home 2-1, in a match in which they even achieved an epic turnaround, and Brentford away 2-0. The Portuguese's team is reminiscent in many ways of that wonderful one of the late Brian Clough, which also won two consecutive European Cups (1979 and 1980).
The 50-year-old (25/12/1974) Portuguese coach,
Nuno Espirito Santo has created an amazing team, which plays
excellent football and can beat any opponent. Besides, they are the only team that has defeated the league leaders Liverpool this year.
From there, with the victory over Everton, Nottingham Forest reached 11 in this year's championship (11/4/4, 26:19 goals) and halfway through this year they have more than they achieved in the two previous seasons, where they had 9 wins each (2022/2023 and 2023/2024 in 38 matches).
So everything indicates that this year's Nottingham, if it cannot be in the top four in the end, it is certain that it will appear next season in a European competition.
