The association became professional in 1936 and since 1938 has been participating in the professional football competitions of the United Kingdom. The team's colors are blue and white and its home base is the legendary Portman Road. Until 1884, the team played at 2 different grounds in the city, Broom Hill and Brook's Hall, but from 1884 they moved to Portman Road where they still play today.
Together with neighboring Norwich they are the 2 biggest football teams in the region and the derby between them (the famous East Anglian Derby) is the most important sporting event in the wider region.
The team's first appearance in the Premier League was accompanied by the simultaneous conquest of the team's only championship (1961/62). Although later Ipswich reached the runner-up position twice (1980/81 and 1981/82). Ipswich also won the FA Cup in 1977/78.
Ipswich is a historic county town in Suffolk, England. The town is located in East Anglia about 10 miles from the mouth of the River Orwell into the North Sea. Ipswich is on both the Great Eastern Railway and the A12 road, 100 km north-east of London, 89 km east-south-east of Cambridge and 72 km south of Norwich. Ipswich is surrounded by two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Ipswich has been a settlement of great economic importance to England throughout its history, especially commercially. The town's historic dock, today's Ipswich Quay, was known as the largest and most important dock in the kingdom.
Former international full-back Mick Mills is the Club's caps record holder with 591 appearances between 1966 and 1982.
The all-time leading goalscorer is Ray Crawford, with 203 goals from 1958 to 1969. Ted Phillips with 41 goals in the 1956/57 season holds the record for goals scored in a season while he is the most capped player in the National Team, having 47 appearances in the Northern Ireland National Team.
Therefore, Ipswich, which was playing in the Championship this year, ensured its return to the big division, after its great victory with 2-0 against Huddersfield. Refusing to... give Leeds second place in the standings, leading to direct promotion.
Kieran McKenna's side needed just a point to seal promotion in the final game of the season, becoming the first side since Southampton in 2012 to win back-to-back promotions from the third tier to the Premier League.
So there is no end to the fairy tale about the amazing Ipswich! A year ago she was celebrating her promotion to the Championship and now she is in... heaven, since just 12 months later she climbed to the top of English football, mathematically ensuring her return to the Premier League after 22 years!
Its dynamic potential consists of: Goalkeepers: Walton Christian, Hladky Vaclav Defenders: Burgess Cameron, Edmundson George, Tuanzebe Axel, Brandon Williams, Luke Woolfenden, Leif Davis Midfielders: Jeremy Sarmiento, Travis Lewis, Taylor Jack, Morsy Samy, Luongo Massimo, Hutchinson Omari, Humphreys Cameron, Clarke Harrison , Burns Wes, Broadhead Nathan, Ball Dominic. Forwards: Al-Hamadi Ali, Aluko Sone, Buabo Gerard, Chaplin Conor, Harness Marcus, Hirst George, Jackson Kayden, Moore Kieffer. The president and owner of the team is Marcus Evans.
The last time the club competed in the salons of the Island was in 2004. The Blues (together with Leeds) experienced a crazy season with incredible upheavals but in the last game of the Championship they beat Huddersfield 2-0 and followed Leicester in the Premier League. They needed just a point to "lock in" their return, while Leeds (beaten 2-1 by Southampton) were only hoping for their defeat and a simultaneous victory of their own.
Burns opened the scoring for Ipswich in the 27th minute and Hutchinson in the 48th minute set up the final score. This victory for McKenna's team to leave Leeds in 3rd place, forcing them to challenge for promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.
The teams in the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League are:
Leeds
Southampton
West Brom
Norwich
