Former Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini, who led the Italian club to its most successful period in history, died on Tuesday (2/1) at the age of 80. He was hospitalized in a clinic in the province of Ravenna due to the deterioration of his condition by complications associated with a colon problem, which had led to his hospitalization in recent days.
Zamparini had already been hospitalized on Christmas Eve and underwent emergency abdominal surgery for peritonitis at the Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Udine. Where he was also in the intensive care unit for a few days after surgery due to the severity of the clinical picture.
A few days later, Zamparini had recovered to the point where his doctors allowed him to return home, even though his overall health was not very good.
Zamparini coached the Sicilian club from 2002-18, helping him advance to Serie A for the first time in 31 years.
