For Erling Haaland, Real Madrid should be the next stop after BVB. But the pending transfer of PSG star Kylian Mbappé could become a problem for the Norwegian.
It's only a matter of time before Kylian Mbappé's move to Real Madrid is publicly announced. The French superstar didn't renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and is available on a free transfer in the summer. If the two capital clubs didn't meet in the round of 16 of the
UEFA Champions League, the future of the 2018 world champions might already have been officially settled.
But the royals want to go even further. Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund is also on the Spaniards' shopping list. According to consistent media reports, the Norwegian is said to be very impressed by Real Madrid. Despite the mutual interest, there are now a few complications, as the "Ruhr Nachrichten" reports. Club president Florentino Pérez is said to have already informed those around Haaland that the Spaniards prefer a transfer in the summer of 2023.
The 74-year-old is said to have suggested that Haaland enter into negotiations with BVB and ask that the release clause that applies for this summer be postponed to next year, in order to then succeed Karim Benzema. Due to the outstanding form of the French, the need for action in the real offensive is not that great. Despite his 34 years, the Frenchman continues to score regularly and the end of his career is not yet in sight. The Spaniards definitely want to keep Benzema for another year.
Haaland on top would be a very expensive luxury that should weigh heavily on the Spaniards' account, since Mbappé's contract and the associated bonus money should tear a huge hole in Real's budget. If the Norwegian were to come a year later to succeed Benzema, Madrilenians' accountants would breathe a sigh of relief.
If Haaland really only wants to switch to Real Madrid and no other interested party, he will have a small problem in the summer. It could be a stroke of luck for BVB.
