World football mourns the loss of perhaps its greatest player. Brazil's three-time world champion Pelé died in Sao Paulo on Thursday at the age of 82, his family confirmed. He had been ill for some time and recently had to be treated in the hospital.
"Everything we are, we are thanks to you. We love you forever. Rest in peace," his daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram. According to the Albert Einstein Hospital, Pelé, who had long battled cancer, died of "multiple organ failure."
At 8:18 p.m. German time, a black and white photo of the football legend appeared on Pelé's official Twitter account. "Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele who passed away peacefully today. Love, love and love forever," read the caption.
