World football mourns the loss of perhaps its greatest player. Brazil's three-time world champion Pelé died in Sao Paulo on Thursday at the age of 82, his family confirmed. He had been ill for some time and recently had to be treated in the hospital.


"Everything we are, we are thanks to you. We love you forever. Rest in peace," his daughter Kely Nascimento wrote on Instagram. According to the Albert Einstein Hospital, Pelé, who had long battled cancer, died of "multiple organ failure."


At 8:18 p.m. German time, a black and white photo of the football legend appeared on Pelé's official Twitter account. "Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele who passed away peacefully today. Love, love and love forever," read the caption.


The reactions of the football world to Pelé's death were not long in coming:


Brazil's football association CBF: "Pelé, king forever."

Neymar (Brazilian national team record scorer with Pelé): "Before Pele, 10 was just a number. I read that sentence somewhere, at some point in my life. But this sentence, beautiful as it is, is incomplete. I would say before "Pele was football just a sport. Pele changed everything. He turned football into art, into entertainment. Arsenal failed to maintain the euphoric atmosphere that existed after the imposing 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
