The Uruguayan, Gustavo Poyet, one day after the completion (officially) of the contract (31/3/2024) he had with the Hellenic Football Federation, was posted on his personal Instagram account. The 57-year-old coach thanked all his partners in the last two years in the Greek National Team, stressing that it was an honor for him to be on the "blue and white" bench.
The South American coach emphasized that his future is still not clear and if there is a prospect of him staying in the Greek National Team, he would definitely like to continue. But he emphasized that no matter what happens, he will be a supporter of the blue team.
Characteristically, Gustavo Poyet states in his post:
"After two fantastic years, my coaching staff and I reached the end of our contract yesterday. I don't know what will happen, but this is the end of our journey, I can't help but express my gratitude.
Working and representing the Greek national team was an absolute honor and pleasure for me. Thank you to everyone who helped us (EPO staff, medical staff and caregivers), but also to those who supported us on this journey. The passion of the fans in this country is unmatched anywhere else.
Of course, I would like to say a special thank you to each player. Your dedication and talent have been the cornerstone of our success over the past two years, and we won't let this week's penalties overshadow the incredible progress we've made together.
It is an honor to work with such an outstanding group of players who have class both on and off the pitch. Who knows what the future holds, whether we continue together or not, but one thing is for sure - I will forever be a supporter of Greece."
The bottom line is that now the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Football Federation has the floor, which will study and judge what will happen to Mr. Poyet, who may not be the world's top coach (would the Guardiola, probably not) but he worked and most importantly created a family, as we saw in the national team.
Recall that he was officially hired on
February 11, 2022. He made his debut in a friendly game in March of the same year, where he won 1-0 away from Romania. His first official match was a
1-0 away win over
Northern Ireland for the 2022-23 Nations league on 2 June 2022. …
