The German, Tuchel at the helm of the England national team

The 51-year-old Thomas Tuchel takes over the technical leadership of the England national team from January 1, 2025 and will have a time horizon of the final phase of the World Cup in 2026.

Thomas Tuchel as head coach of Chelsea FC in 2021

The 51-year-old Thomas Tuchel takes over the technical leadership of the England national team from January 1, 2025 and will have a time horizon of the final phase of the World Cup in 2026. And an annual salary of 7.2 million euros. Greece in Athens will be present on the field, but as an observer England will also be guided by their official coach, Lee Carsley, who still has a contract with the football federation of his country.

After the swift progress of negotiations, the former Chelsea manager, who has won the Champions League with the Londoners in 2021, will become the first German in the history of the representative group to take the reins of the "Three Lions" and third outside the borders, after the Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson and the Italian, Fabio Capello.

So the hiring of Tuchel will put an end to the uncertainty surrounding the position of the coach of the "three lions" since last summer and the resignation of Gareth Southgate, after EURO 2024. But of course also the unexpected defeat that England suffered in at Wembley by Greece with 2-1.

The German coach, who has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, began his contacts with the English FA last month. He held talks with Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott.

Harry Kane said: "Kane Obviously, I know Thomas well, having worked with him last year (at Bayern Munich). He's a fantastic coach, a fantastic person."

The hiring of Tuchel, who once coached Mainz, Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, by the English FA for the role of national coach has given rise to comments from the German side, with "Bild" claiming that the desperation of the "three lions" " for a title after 60 years brought the German on their way.

The fact that the football association of England chose a solution that comes from the "unspeakable enemy" Germany (for the first time in its history) was commented on in different ways. With the "Daily Mail" speaking of "a dark day for English football" and at the same time voices (see Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand) were heard in favor of Lee Carsley staying. Tuchel, as in his two previous teams, will now have the Englishman, Anthony Barry, as his assistant.

"I am very proud to have been given the honor of leading the England team," Tuchel, named Fifa and Uefa coach of the year in 2021, said in a statement.

Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard at Chelsea in 2021 and a few months later led them to the Champions League title — outwitting Manchester City's Pep Guardiola in the final.

He was sacked by Chelsea in 2022 and appointed as Bayern Munich coach in March 2023 in place of Julian Nagelsmann.

Tuchel: "I feel a special relationship with this country"

"Hey guys, Thomas here. I'm a little bit nervous, it's true. This is my first message as England manager. I'm at Wembley, where else? And that's a reason to be a little bit nervous, and I think that's a good thing. I give you my word that I am very excited and it is my honor.

I will do everything to first qualify for the final stage of the World Cup and then have a successful tournament and try to put the second star on our shirt. See you soon on the pitch," said Thomas Tuchel.

The Prince of Wales and president of the Football Association of England wrote in a post: “Exciting times for the England national team, with a generation of talented players and a new manager taking the reins. Thomas, I wish you the best of luck, we are all behind you! W".

However, England captain Harry Kane said: "Obviously, I know Thomas well, having worked with him last year (at Bayern Munich). He's a fantastic coach, a fantastic person."

Bayern also won

With the signing of Tuchel, Bayern Munich also wins. The point is that others besides England are explained by this signature. This was the case at Bayern Munich, who Tuchel coached from March 2023 to June 2024. He was under contract until June 2025 but in January it was announced that they had "decided by mutual agreement" to continue their partnership. So now, as "SPORT1" had written, if Tuchel did not find a job before June 1, 2025, Bayern was obliged to pay him the amount of 10 million euros...

Now the reason is on the pitch for Thomas Tuchel…

The two foreigners who had worked in the England national team, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, had achieved:

Sven-Goran Eriksson (2001-2006)

Sven-Goran Eriksson was England’s first overseas manager

Record: Played 67, won 40, drawn 17, lost 10, scored 128, conceded 61, win ratio 59.7 percent

Tournament history: 2002 World Cup quarter-final, Euro 2004 quarter-final, 2006 World Cup quarter-final.

Fabio Capello (2007-2012)

Fabio Capello succeeded Eriksson as England manager in 2007

Overall record: Played 42, won 28, drawn eight, lost six, scored 89, conceded 35, win ratio 66.7 percent.

Tournament record: Last 16 at 2010 World Cup, qualified for Euro 2012.
