The 2-0 loss sparks a debate on accountability: Martinez turns his focus to the board
Following the Champions League defeat against Atlético de Madrid, the Argentine player criticized Manchester United's transfer policy.
In Madrid, Manchester United lost a match and found themselves facing a discussion that goes beyond the result itself. Atletico’s 2-0 victory added weight to an already difficult period. However, comments made by Argentine international center-back Lisandro Martinez shifted the focus from missed chances to the club's strategic planning and the allocation of responsibility.
The Argentine defender did not seek solace in the team's effort. He described the performance as very poor and linked the team's showing to United's broader situation. In his view, the foundations laid last season required substantial continuity in the transfer market to enable the squad to meet heightened expectations and adapt to the way opponents were adjusting to them.
His point was clear: he expected more from the technical director. He argued that a stronger squad was needed, with better coverage of defensive and attacking requirements. At the same time, he acknowledged that the players themselves need to deliver more. This admission accompanied his defense of Michael Carrick, whom he believed was doing his best despite lacking proper support.
Martinez also raised the issue of frequent managerial changes. He questioned why, when results take a turn for the worse, the focus shifts to the manager while other areas escape scrutiny. His comments added a new layer of tension to the evening—this time, off the pitch.
Lisandro Martinez didn’t hold back after Man United’s defeat to Atletico Madrid: 💰 On squad investment: “Yes. I expected more from our technical director.” 👔 On Carrick’s job this season: “You keep changing managers, but what about other areas? It’s easy to say coach, players, but we also have to look at others.” 📉 On Man United’s performance: “The performance was poor, really poor. I have to control myself. It mirrors our club currently. This isn’t a Champions League quality club.”

Wayne Rooney viewed his remarks with reservation. While acknowledging the club's need for greater investment, he felt the defender had gone too far. He pointed out that his own performances had not been up to par either, and judged that the team's collective effort did not warrant such harsh dismissal.
Indeed, United had responded after conceding a goal just 53 seconds in. Baena found space behind the defense and set up Pablo Barrios to make it 1–0. The visitors responded with chances for Mbeumo and Rashford, displaying greater cohesion thanks to the presence of an extra midfielder. Atlético, however, remained dangerous. Grimaldo hit the woodwork with a free-kick, had a goal disallowed for handball in the 44th minute, and Julián Álvarez also struck the woodwork in the 54th minute. In the 69th minute, an effort by Bruno Fernandes met the same fate. Yoro’s sending-off in the 74th minute, following a challenge on Jonathan David, diminished hopes of a comeback. Lookman rounded off the scoring in the 81st minute.
Michael Carrick spoke of four great chances and described the red card as harsh. He declined to comment on Martínez's statements without having seen them, calling instead for unity ahead of the match against Leeds. Belgian international midfielder Youri Tielemans also avoided confrontation, emphasizing hard work, confidence, and the need for victories.
Atlético secured their first points of the competition. United remained on three points, but the impact went beyond the standings; the team now faces the challenge of addressing its weaknesses without compromising its cohesion. Sunday offers an immediate opportunity to bounce back. For it to gain value, the effort will need to be matched by effectiveness—unlike in Madrid, where good moments ultimately failed to yield a goal.
