The new owner and president of AEK Athens, shipowner Marios Iliopoulos, even at the last moment, made several important additions to his team, with the aim of regaining the championship in the Greek Super League. So after the Argentinian, winger, Erik Lamela, his countryman, Roberto Pereira, and the Haitian, forward, Frantzdy Pierro thas now also agreed with the international French striker, Anthony Martial. The footballer whose move to AEK seemed unlikely until recently.
And yet the constant pressure and the unceasing work of Antonis Iliopoulos (cousin) the strong man of the Union, together with the former international Algerian striker and now agent, Rafik Djebbour, paid off.
AEK found everything with Anthony Martial and the 29-year-old footballer came to Athens on a private jet on Wednesday night (18/9). The new transfer acquisition of the Greek team was enthusiastically welcomed at the "Eleftherios Venizelos" airport by hundreds of fans of the Union. At the airport he was welcomed by Antonis Iliopoulos, the man who had played the most active role and had contacts with the French striker.
The international striker will now undergo the necessary medical tests and then his three-year partnership with AEK will be officially announced.
Martial's earnings will amount to 2.5 million euros per year. In other words, his weekly salary will be 60,000 euros per week!.
The case of the former ace of Manchester United is not heard for the first time for the "yellow and black", as he had played "strongly" for Matias Almeyda's team and a few weeks ago, however, at that time the case had not progressed, as it seemed that the footballer he wanted to move to a Brazilian team and more specifically Flamengo. But the agreement was not made as Martial's demands were unrealistic.
The explosive ace left Manchester United last July after 9 years at Old Trafford, where he made a total of 317 appearances (90 goals, 47 assists, 30 times international – he has also won a Europa League, an FA Cup and two League Cap). Last year, he played on loan at Sevilla, having a mediocre season with 12 matches and just 1 goal.
In recent years, Martial has struggled. In fact, he has scored just 19 goals in the last four years. During that time, he missed 65 games through injury and never actually started in his entire United history.
The course of his career may not have been commensurate with the highest ambitions that existed for him, but he remains a top striker who can make a huge difference in the Greek league. Now at AEK, the French international is aiming to renew his career by showing off his skills on the pitch, something he has struggled to do in recent seasons.
