Friday 20/10/2023 was a day Spyros Angelidis will remember forever. The 18-year-old (2005) Greek goalkeeper was in Werder Bremen's squad for the match against Borussia Dortmund for the first time, three months after his transfer from PAOK to the German club.
The young goalkeeper of the Greek youth national team left in the summer after almost a decade in the "Northern Doubleheader". His performances with his team and with the "minor" national teams have attracted the interest of several European clubs, such as Sassuolo, Juventus and Marseille, with Werder Bremen being the final choice.
In Bremen, Angelidis encountered ideal conditions from the first day. He was immediately promoted to the first team with which he trains to this day, while he is a key player in the club's U19 team. He has made six appearances in the Bundesliga Youth Championship, once he was named MVP and two times he was in the best eleven of the competition.
The injuries to two of the main goalkeepers, gave him the opportunity to take "the baptism of fire" in a first team assignment, in the defeat (1-0) by Dortmund. The German media highlighted this fact, pointing out that he is the youngest goalkeeper in Werder's history to be included in a squad and that he has all the potential to become the second Greek goalkeeper to play at a high level in Germany, after Odysseus VlachodImos. (3 appearances with Stuttgart in 2015).
At 18.5 years old, Spyros Angelidis spends most of the day at the team's training center. Next to the Weserstadion, in an area of hundreds of acres with 11 training pitches (8 with natural, 3 with artificial turf), gym, recreation rooms, medical center and in general everything a young person needs to stay completely focused on football.
The footballer has now adapted 100% to his new team, where he has regulated his daily life and his friends and has developed friendly relations with several of his teammates.
At the same time, Angelidis is preparing for the first serious mission with the youth national team, which will take part in the EURO 2024 qualifiers in November.
