For the fifth consecutive year, a Brazilian team has won the Copa Libertadores. This time it's the turn of
Fernando Diniz's Fluminense, interim coach of the Seleçao, led on the pitch by Felipe Melo and Marcelo. The red-greens explode Maracanã, defeating
Boca Juniors 2-1
after extra time.
Fluminense prevails in extra time against Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores final. For the first twenty-five minutes or so the match sees the Brazilians enjoying a lot of ball possession and the Argentines already covering themselves. However, Almiron's men are unable to react, neither team has created any opportunities.
In the thirty-sixth minute it was the green and gold who took the lead with Cano who fired a shot into Romero's bottom right corner following a brilliant assist from Keno.
Thus ends a first half which saw the Brazilians clearly in control of the match, deservedly taking the lead, maintaining possession of the ball clearly in their favour.
In the seventh of the second half the captain and driving force of Diniz's boys, Felipe Melo, gets injured and the former Sassuolo defender, Marlon, comes in his place.
The first real opportunity for Almiron's men only came in the fifty-sixth minute when Advincula reached the edge of the penalty area but only grazed the post.
Fluminense demands a penalty but the match director doesn't see it, discussions begin which make the environment a bit nervous.
Shortly afterwards, Cavani was booked for protests and also risked a red card, luckily things calmed down.
In the 73rd minute the Argentine equalizer arrives, Advincula again overcomes a series of opponents, from the edge of the area he shoots perfectly to the bottom corner to the left of Fabio.
For a few minutes we were in suspense because the VAR could have ruled it out for offside but the goal was confirmed, it was 1-1.
We are approaching the final minutes and Merentiel comes close to scoring the match with a great shot from distance, the ball barely goes out.
We go to extra time with the Brazilians taking the lead again in the 99th minute when
Kennedy
hooks at the edge and pierces Romero.
