11 years later Laporta returned to loves club
Barcelona has a new president. After several things that happened from the summer onwards, the great team of Catalonia finally found a new strong man, its former president, 58-year-old lawyer, Joan Laporta.
In the elections that took place on Sunday (7/3), Laporta, who was the undisputed favorite, prevailed. So he returns to the presidency after 11 years, as he had served again for 7 years (from 2003-2010). So 11 years later, he takes over the presidency of the former European champion. Laporta dominated the election with 54.28% (30,184 votes), compared to 29.99% (16,679) for Victor Font and 8.99% (4,769) for Tony Freixa.
«First of all, I want to thank everyone who participated in this election, which was the most important in its history because of the pandemic that changed our lives. I also thank the board, the election board, the polling station, the auditors. It was a celebration of the Republic and of Barcelona «, the new president began his statements and continued:
«I want to especially thank Johan Cruyff, who definitely helped us. «It inspires us in all the decisions we have to make, this candidacy is a candidacy of ‘Cruifist’ and Barcelona,» said 58-year-old Joan Laporta in their first statements, wearing a mask (for protection against covid-19) with number 14, the number of Johan Cruyff.
Mr. Laporta then spoke about Lionel Messi, who will make every effort to keep him close to him, in Barcelona:
«On a day like today (March 7), Lionel Messi made his debut for the Barcelona Youth team. I saw that the best football player in the world came to vote and in the history of football, for me he is an example, who knows what we had discussed during the campaign. Messi wants Barcelona, the best player in the world wants Barcelona and that is very important. We will encourage him to continue with us, something we all want. «This wonderful family, which is Barcelona, will overcome these difficulties and we will achieve the goals we have set,» he concluded.
The 58-year-old will essentially succeed Josep Maria Bartomeu (who resigned in October to avoid a vote of no confidence by members who turned against him) and formally Carlos Tuskets, who had taken over temporarily.
Of course, the big issue that led Bartomeu to resign was that of Lionel Messi, who in August, and especially after the 8-2 defeat of Barcelona by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Messi, in fact, was among the Barcelona footballers, who went with his son and voted in the elections, a day after the 2-0 away victory over Osasuna in Pamplona and the «climbing» of the «Blaugrana» in second place in La Liga.
It is worth noting that according to the announcement of the Barcelona administration, out of its 109,531 official members, 51,765 voted, due to coronavirus.
Now a new and difficult day is rising for Barcelona….
