"FIFA never proposed a World Cup every two years", but only studied its "expediency", as its president, Gianni Infantino, said, bowing to the numerous objections caused by this controversial project and saying that it is now turning to "compromise" agreement.

"Let me be very clear: FIFA has never proposed a World Cup every two years," Infantino said from the podium at the International Federation's annual conference in Doha, Qatar, where this burning issue is not even on the agenda.

"The last FIFA Congress (in 2021) gave a vote to the FIFA administration to study the feasibility of a World Cup every two years," he recalled.

"FIFA did not offer anything at all. They concluded that it was possible and that it would have an impact. "The next phase is consultation, discussion, finding an agreement and compromises," he continued.

Leaving its director of development, the Frenchman Arsene Wenger, to support the World Cup qualification every two years from March 2021, while from 1930 it was every four years for men and from 1991 for women, FIFA promised more "solidarity" revenue to each of its federations if the reform was successful.

She had secured the support of the African and Asian federations, yet she struggled to convince herself that she was truly open to all options. to reform the international calendar after 2024.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, head of the denial front with Conmebol, said he was convinced in early March that the project, which directly threatens the UEFA Champions League and European clubs, was now "excluded".

After this fall, it will be necessary to see what direction the calendar reform is taking now. Some refer to the return of the Confederations Cup, a mini-tournament with eight nationals or an enlargement.

"It takes discussion to find what is best for everyone. The big ones have to get bigger and the small ones have to benefit as well. "For that, thank you all for your contribution," concluded Infantino.
